The Evolving Family Office Blueprint: From Complexity to Clarity

What distinguishes emerging family offices today is not performance or access, but a deliberate move toward self-reliance, recognising that governance, control, and legacy protection are as critical as capital growth.

Masterclass Details

Many families now face an “in-between” challenge: complexity has outgrown informal structures yet lacks the scale of an institutional model. The result is decision fatigue, governance gaps, and adviser overload that can quietly erode value.

This masterclass is designed for PWN Members navigating liquidity events, succession, and investment resets. Through practical frameworks and family case studies, this session provides clarity on both structural and human realities.

This masterclass explores:
  • PWN Member perspectives on structuring a family office at different stages of growth
  • Establishing and evolving a family office without over- or under-building
  • Practical governance: clear decision rights, founder control with guardrails, and next-generation involvement
  • Investing for legacy and purpose, including generational and philanthropic capital
  • Operating with an investment committee mindset
  • Managing personal pressures after success, including lifestyle, identity, and complexity

Future Proofing the Family Office: From GenAI to Autonomous Agents

AI is reshaping the way we live and operate — but for many family offices, it remains misunderstood, underutilised, or approached with unnecessary caution.

Masterclass Details

Designed for family office principals and advisers, this practical workshop demystifies AI, covering everything from how large language models actually work to the emerging world of autonomous agents that can execute complex tasks independently. Through real-world case studies— portfolio optimisation, due diligence automation, and intergenerational knowledge transfer — participants will see where AI delivers genuine value in a family office context.

The session also tackles the hard questions: governance, human accountability, Australian privacy law, data sovereignty, and regulatory compliance. It closes with a four-step implementation roadmap to help family offices move from AI-curious to AI-enabled, securely and confidently.

This masterclass explores:

  • Where AI can deliver immediate value in a family office — from sharper investment insights to faster, more efficient operations
  • How AI tools and autonomous agents can enhance decision-making while preserving human judgement and control
  • Practical ways to streamline due diligence, reporting, knowledge management, and portfolio monitoring
  • How to manage risk through strong governance, privacy safeguards, and compliance with Australian data and regulatory requirements
  • A clear, practical roadmap to help your family office adopt AI with confidence and measurable outcomes

Afternoon Masterclass

Death and Taxes: An Overview of the Current Tax and Estate Planning Environment

The tax rules governing the restructuring of family groups are highly technical—often unnecessarily so. CGT rollovers frequently contain requirements and drafting anomalies that serve little apparent purpose and fail to address specific tax mischief. This is particularly evident for private groups that have consolidated for tax purposes, where the interaction between the CGT rules and consolidation often does not operate smoothly.

Masterclass Details

The ATO’s strict technical approach can result in unexpected outcomes for taxpayers, particularly family group taxpayers. Of even greater concern is the ATO’s use of the tax avoidance regime (Part IVA) when advisers take steps to mitigate these unintended outcomes.

This session is a valuable opportunity for PWN Members to raise questions and real-world scenarios in a confidential setting.

This masterclass explores:

1. Tax:

  • The state of play regarding the Commissioner’s guidance on back-to-back rollovers

  • The application of Part IVA to rollovers in light of recent cases, such as Merchant v Commissioner of Taxation (soon to be heard in the High Court), even where taxpayers comply with the technical requirements of the legislation

  • If time permits, a brief overview of other recent tax developments, including:
    - Superannuation Division 296 tax
    - The significant High Court case Commissioner of Taxation v Bendel, concerning unpaid distributions from discretionary trusts

2. Estate Planning:

  • The rise of family charters or rule books, and strategies for optimising the use of the family bank

  • Anticipating government and ATO interventions – Potential attacks on family wealth, including death duties or inheritance taxes by stealth, and possible removal of deceased estate concessions

  • Protecting assets from predators and creditors – Testamentary trusts remain a strong vehicle, provided control is properly structured

The Younger-Gen Inheritance: Identity, Freedom and the Wealth You Can't Put in a Will

This intimate session, led by Joanna Sun, opens the door to a conversation that rarely happens in formal family office settings but is urgently needed. Drawing on lived experience and deep psychological insight, the session explores the invisible inheritance passed between generations—beliefs about worthiness, safety, identity, and belonging that shape every governance conversation and succession plan.

Masterclass Details

In a confidential setting, through guided reflection, interactive exercises, and open dialogue, participants examine the pressures they carry, the roles they’ve been assigned, and the freedom they long to claim.

Across four arcs—Invisible Inheritance, Identity, Freedom, and Relational Courage—Joanna helps younger‑gen Members articulate who they are becoming, what they want to build, and how to begin the conversations that change family systems. Participants leave feeling seen, lighter, and more connected, with a clearer sense of the legacy they want to pass forward.

This masterclass explores:

1. Understanding the Invisible Inheritance

  • Participants gain clarity on the emotional and psychological legacies that shape family dynamics and leadership far more than financial capital

2. Reclaiming Identity and Direction

  • Younger‑gen Members explore the gap between assigned roles and chosen roles, building a grounded sense of self that can stand within—and sometimes apart from—the family system

3. Stepping Into Courageous Dialogue

  • The session offers practical tools for beginning the conversations that unlock autonomy, strengthen relationships, and shape the legacy they will one day pass forward
